Skincare, #SephoraKids and Self-Esteem
Due to one of my children’s sporting activities, I spend a lot of time at a London swimming pool, which is positioned dangerously close to a very large shopping mall. A few months ago, I popped in at about 4.30pm to grab a few essentials, and found myself battling through hordes of tweens and teens to reach the shop I needed. Live music was booming from the upper floor, and a huge crowd was being whirled into an excited frenzy by a hype man on a thunderous PA system.

Help, our Year 10 child has recently broken up with her boyfriend and is very distressed. What can we do as parents to support her? I tried telling her that we have all been through such things, but this hasn’t helped!

Research Interests
One of Dr Moote’s main passions is broadening the pursuit of STEM – particularly making STEM a safer and more inclusive space for people of all backgrounds and characteristics.
Does school-based careers education, advice, information and guidance (CEAIG) have any influence on later life outcomes? A new paper written by Dr Julie Moote and colleagues seeks to find out what relationship there is between young people’s perceptions of the quality and quantity of school-based careers activities and education experienced at the age of 14–16 and their outcomes several years later, when they are 21–22.
The analysis showed that experiencing a greater number of career advice and guidance activities at school significantly predicted more positive future prospects. The more activities that an individual reported taking part in, and the more activities they reported as being helpful, the more likely they were to report confidence and low levels of concern when thinking about their future employment or training. Young adults who recalled having a greater amount of careers guidance at school felt more confident about their future work prospects, better prepared for life and experienced greater life satisfaction, and those who were in employment felt happier and more satisfied with their jobs.

Sextortion: what is it and why is it in the news?
The National Crime Agency has issued an alert to UK teachers following an increase in sextortion: a type of online blackmail in which the offender threatens to release nude or intimate photos of the victim.
#InspireInclusion: Celebrating International Women’s Day
You are probably already aware that it’s International Women’s Day today. This year’s theme is #InspireInclusion and the event focuses on celebrating women’s achievements, raising awareness about discrimination and taking action to drive gender parity. Working as part of a small (but growing) team of fantastic women (and men), these are things that we are passionate about at Tooled Up, and we have plenty of resources for the Tooled Up community which will help to break down stereotypes and recognise the successes of some remarkable women.
